Pro-Europe rally day after anti-austerity (and pro-SYRIZA) protest held

Syntagma square again the venue for rally in central Athens

Newsroom June 18 07:40

A day after a pro-government rally in central Athens across from Parliament, unofficially dubbed an “anti-austerity” protest, a second rally was held on Thursday evening  under the theme “We’re staying in Europe”.

As the slogan denotes, participants were asked to rally in favor of the country’s continued eurozone and EU membership, a not-so-indirect criticism at the way the radical leftist government has conducted negotiations with institutional creditors since assuming power in late January.

According to local media, there were more participants at Thursday’s rally than the one the previous day, the more pro-government one.

As with anti-government rallies of in the pre-SYRIZA government era and the once trendy “Indignados” movement, the “Menoume Evropi” rally was mostly organized via Facebook, with 11,000 users pledging to participate so far.

“Greece belongs in Europe! It’s time we united our voices in favor of our country’s presence in the eurozone; in favor of our country’s presence in the European family; we choose a Europe of pluralism, a Europe of respect of human rights and progress. We’re sending a loud message to the government; the times are critical and we can’t remain silent spectators,” was the message issued by organisers.

The hashtag for the event was #MenoumeEvropi
