Last year, 5.4 million citizens of all ages took at least one trip for personal or business reasons. A total of 9.6 million trips were taken, marking a 7.2% increase in the number of travelers and an 11% increase in the number of trips compared to 2024 figures. The corresponding number of overnight stays totaled 85.8 million, and spending reached 4,122.1 million euros, marking increases of 5.5% and 11.3%, respectively.
According to a survey on the characteristics of domestic tourists conducted by ELSTAT, with 2025 as the reference year:
The number of people aged 15 and older who took at least one trip for personal or business reasons reached 4.6 million, marking an increase of 8.4%. A total of 8.2 million trips were taken, marking a 13% increase compared to 2024. The corresponding number of overnight stays reached 74.3 million, and spending totaled 3,860.8 million euros, representing increases of 7.4% and 12.5%, respectively. Of these trips, 97% were for personal reasons (rest, recreation, vacations, visits to relatives and friends, other personal reasons), while 3% were for business purposes.
Specifically, a comparison of data on trips taken for personal reasons in 2025 with the corresponding figures for 2024 there was an 8.7% increase in the number of domestic tourists who took at least one trip, a 13.7% increase in the number of trips, a 13.3% increase in spending, and a 7.4% increase in overnight stays.
Regarding age groups, the most significant increase in the number of domestic tourists in absolute terms compared to 2024 is observed in the age group over 65, with a 24% change. In the same age group, there was a corresponding increase of 28.5% in the number of trips, 21% in spending, and 12.1% in overnight stays.
As for length of stay, the most significant increase in absolute terms compared to 2024 is observed in the number of trips lasting 1 to 3 overnight stays, the number of which rose by 26.7%, while the corresponding expenditures increased by 21.6% and overnight stays by 27.8%.
Regarding the modes of transportation used for personal travel, 5.3 million trips were made by land, 1.4 million by air, and 1.3 million by sea. Land travel also showed the largest increase in absolute terms, with a corresponding change of 12.6%.
As for the type of accommodation used for personal travel, 52.1% of these trips involved non-rental accommodations, representing a 13.1% increase. Overnight stays accounted for 71.6% of the total number of overnight stays. Similarly, for 47.9% of trips taken for personal reasons, rental accommodations were used. These trips increased by 14.3%, and overnight stays by 16.1%.
Regarding the duration of trips and the corresponding average daily total expenditure, it is noted that 40.7% of domestic personal trips and 49.5% abroad lasted 4–7 days, with an average daily total expenditure of 76.7 euros and 152.7 euros, respectively.
