Firefighting crews responded immediately, deploying 10 firefighters with four fire engines, including two firefighters and one vehicle being transported by ferry from Naxos.

Aerial firefighting operations are being carried out by one helicopter and two firefighting aircraft, while municipal water tankers and heavy machinery are also assisting efforts to contain the blaze.

According to initial reports, the fire is not threatening any homes.

Shortly before 3pm, a message was sent via the 112 emergency alert system to residents’ mobile phones, instructing those in the areas of Agios Charalambos Kambis, Bougados and Aneratzia to move towards Aliki.

The Cyclades Arson Investigation Unit, which handles suspected cases of arson in the region, has already taken up the case and is investigating the circumstances under which the fire broke out.

Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the Mayor of Paros, Konstantinos Bizas, said the fire broke out in the Agios Charalambos area, noting that a helicopter had been operating from the very first moment, while two Canadair aircraft were expected from Athens to reinforce firefighting efforts.

Mr Bizas clarified that the fire broke out in the area of the municipal landfill site rather than within a residential or forested area, adding that all available forces on the island were at the scene, battling to contain it.
