The Greek Foreign Ministry has expressed its satisfaction with the statements made by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and his intention to convene a new multilateral conference on the Cyprus issue in a 5+1 format.

Athens remains ready to contribute constructively towards a successful informal meeting, encouraging every effort and confidence-building initiative as a necessary condition for the resumption of talks. As highlighted in the Foreign Ministry’s statement, Greece supports the holding of an informal expanded meeting aimed at restarting negotiations, based on the agreed framework and under the auspices of the United Nations.

“We welcome the statements by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who remains firmly committed to the Good Offices Mission entrusted to him by the UN Security Council, with the aim of achieving a comprehensive, fair and sustainable solution to the Cyprus issue within the parameters set by the United Nations.

We also welcome the announcement regarding the holding of an informal expanded meeting aimed at restarting negotiations, based on the agreed framework and under the auspices of the UN.

Greece, in coordination with the Republic of Cyprus and recognising the importance of maintaining the momentum that has developed around the Cyprus issue over the past more than two years, remains ready to contribute constructively towards a successful informal meeting, encouraging every effort and confidence-building initiative as a necessary condition for the resumption of negotiations.

The steadfast objective remains the resolution of the Cyprus issue within the parameters established by the United Nations Security Council and the reunification of the island.”
