After the departure of several high-profile AI researchers, Google is pinning its hopes on Hassabis, whose groundbreaking work on AlphaFold earned him the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The company expects him to replicate that level of innovation as it seeks to outpace competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
His appointment as President and Chief Scientist of Google’s AI operations also highlights the mounting pressure the company faces. Once regarded as the undisputed leader in AI research, Google now finds itself racing to reclaim its position at the forefront of the industry.
At the same time, the promotion is another recognition of Hassabis’ extraordinary career. It elevates him to one of the most influential figures in global technology and one of the world’s most sought-after AI executives. His personal fortune is estimated to range from hundreds of millions to several billion dollars, while Google’s $650 million acquisition of DeepMind in 2014 secured both the company and its visionary founder. From North London to the top of Google
Just days after his 50th birthday, Hassabis’ promotion could be seen as the ultimate career milestone. Born in London on July 27, 1976, his original Greek surname was Hasapis, which he later modified to Hassabis.
Although he does not speak Greek fluently, he has maintained strong ties to his Greek Cypriot heritage. Despite his global success, he has remained based in North London, where he grew up as the son of immigrant parents. His father, Costas Hasapis, was a Greek Cypriot from Famagusta who moved to Britain in the early 1970s, while his mother, Angela, emigrated from Singapore to train as a nurse.
Hassabis lives in the UK with his wife, an Italian molecular biologist, and their two children.
A child chess prodigy
Hassabis displayed extraordinary talent from an early age. At just four years old, he learned chess after watching his father and uncle play. Within months, he was defeating adults.
By the age of 12, he ranked among the world’s best chess players in his age group, and at 13 he was already competing professionally. Yet his passion soon shifted from chess to computers.
Building hit video games as a teenager
Fascinated by computers from the age of eight, Hassabis quickly progressed from playing video games to programming them.
At 17, he created Theme Park, one of the most successful simulation games of the 1990s, while working for Bullfrog Productions. The game became a global bestseller and established him as one of the industry’s brightest young developers.
He later studied computer science at the University of Cambridge before founding Elixir Studios, his own video game company. Although its games were critically acclaimed, they proved too ambitious for the market at the time.
After selling the company, Hassabis returned to academia to study neuroscience, focusing on memory, imagination, and artificial intelligence.
Founding DeepMind
In 2010, Hassabis co-founded DeepMind with the mission of solving intelligence itself and using that knowledge to tackle humanity’s biggest scientific challenges.
The company’s breakthrough came with AlphaGo, the AI system that defeated the world’s top Go players, demonstrating that machine learning could master one of the most complex strategy games ever created.
Google acquired DeepMind in 2014, but Hassabis remained at the helm, continuing to push AI research far beyond traditional computing.
AlphaFold and the Nobel Prize
Hassabis’ greatest scientific achievement came through AlphaFold2, the AI system he developed alongside John Jumper.
For decades, biologists struggled to predict how proteins fold into their three-dimensional structures—a problem central to understanding disease and developing new medicines.
AlphaFold2 solved that challenge by accurately predicting the structures of more than 200 million known proteins, giving scientists worldwide an unprecedented research tool.

Google’s biggest challenge
Despite his remarkable résumé, Hassabis now faces perhaps the greatest challenge of his career.
