Mike Jeffries, former chief executive of Abercrombie & Fitch, has been ruled fit to stand trial by a US federal judge on serious charges of sex trafficking and rape, despite having spent several months in hospital with health problems linked to dementia and Alzheimer’s symptoms.

The ruling clears the way for the case to proceed, with the court finding that the 81-year-old former head of the well-known fashion clothing company has the mental capacity to understand the charges against him and to participate in his defence.

Jeffries is facing charges over his alleged involvement in a sex trafficking and exploitation ring, in a case that has drawn international attention because of the position he held for years at Abercrombie & Fitch.

Prosecutors allege that Jeffries and his associates used their power and influence to lure and abuse men at events organised in various locations.

He has denied the charges and pleaded not guilty.

Battling health problems

Before the court’s ruling, Jeffries’ lawyers had argued that his health problems, including symptoms of dementia and Alzheimer’s, affected his ability to follow such a complex legal process.

The former Abercrombie & Fitch chief had remained under medical care for months as doctors monitored his condition.

However, the federal judge ruled that, despite his health problems, Jeffries has the necessary mental capacity to understand his role in the trial and to work with his lawyers.

From fashion mogul to high-profile court case

Jeffries served as chief executive of Abercrombie & Fitch from 1992 to 2014 and is widely credited with transforming the company into a global fashion brand, as well as one of the most recognisable, and controversial, names in retail.

His legal troubles represent one of the most serious cases to be linked to a former senior executive of a major American company, with attention now turning to the start of the trial and the evidence that will be presented in court.
