A small lake in Makrygiali, Igoumenitsa, has turned pink, on the route towards the Bouka area. According to thespro.gr, almost the entire surface of the water has been covered in an intense pink-fuchsia colour.
One possible explanation for the colouring is a mass growth of microorganisms, such as purple sulphur bacteria, which can turn the water this striking shade.
Similar phenomena are mainly recorded in shallow, stagnant waters, when salinity rises due to evaporation, temperatures are high and oxygen levels drop significantly.
The decomposition of plant matter and other organic material in the lake can also create the right conditions for such microorganisms to develop.
However, to determine the cause of the phenomenon with certainty, water sampling and laboratory testing will need to be carried out.
