Germany’s Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil today called on U.S. President Donald Trump to end the “irresponsible” war with Iran, ahead of his trip to the United States next week to attend the G20 meeting.

“This is the most important message, including to the United States: end this war,” Klingbeil said in an interview with German public broadcaster ARD’s flagship channel. He also blamed Trump for high fuel prices: “The responsibility lies with Donald Trump, with the irresponsible war he started in Iran. These are the consequences we are seeing at gas stations.”

On Monday and Tuesday, finance ministers from the G20 member states will meet in Asheville, North Carolina, ahead of the summit scheduled for December in Miami.

Lars Klingbeil also reiterated his proposal for a windfall tax on oil companies’ excess profits at the European level, stressing that companies are making huge profits as a result of the geopolitical situation. “They are filling their pockets! This has to stop,” he said.

The issue is on the agenda of the EU finance ministers’ meeting, which will take place on September 19 in Dublin.
