Witness statements, findings from the investigation at the clinic, contradictions in the accounts given by the two arrested doctors, and the report of a special committee of the Athens Medical Association form the key elements of the case file drawn up following the death of beloved Greek artist Giorgos Mazonakis, who died at midday last Wednesday (September 9).

The statements point to fatal mistakes, falsehoods and tragic delays.

In particular, the testimony of an EMS paramedic who arrived at the scene reveals that by the time the two doctors facing charges decided to call emergency services, it was already too late. Giorgos Mazonakis was already without a pulse and was not breathing.

The paramedic’s account

The paramedic said that they received the call to go to the clinic of Ilias Theodoropoulos at 4:23 p.m. The dispatch described a man, approximately 55 years old, who had suffered cardiac arrest, without identifying the patient by name.

Three minutes later, at 4:26 p.m., the EMS crew arrived. Upon entering the room where the singer was located, they saw a doctor performing CPR while Mazonakis was lying on his back on a medical bed.

The paramedics found that the artist was neither breathing nor had a pulse, and that his pupils were dilated. They continued CPR and attached a defibrillator, which showed that Mazonakis was in asystole, meaning that his heart rhythm was not shockable.

The doctor then told them that, before their arrival, he had performed CPR on the singer for approximately 10 minutes and had administered one milligram of adrenaline, although it was not clarified whether the drug had been given before or during the cardiac arrest. He subsequently administered another dose of adrenaline in front of the paramedics, but Mazonakis remained in asystole.

The clinic had a defibrillator — but it was not working

According to the paramedic’s testimony, the doctor told the EMS crew that there was a defibrillator at the clinic, but that it was not functioning.

At 4:40 p.m., Mazonakis was transported to hospital, arriving at Elpis Hospital at 4:45 p.m.

A hospital doctor testified that the artist was brought to the emergency department without breathing or a pulse. She added that, upon arrival, he had an intravenous catheter in his right forearm.

No doctor accompanied him to hospital

The doctor also stated that none of the physicians from the private clinic accompanied Mazonakis to the hospital to assist the hospital medical team with his condition.

Evidence undermines Theodoropoulos’s alibi

Meanwhile, new evidence has emerged in the case. CCTV photographs appear to show that doctor Ilias Theodoropoulos, owner of the Stem Cell clinic on Karneadou Street, had left a restaurant in Kolonaki at the time the singer suffered cardiac arrest during the plasmapheresis procedure.

According to the testimony of the taxi driver who transported him, Giorgos Mazonakis arrived at the clinic at 1:55 p.m., rather than at 4 p.m., as Ioanna Gaka had claimed. The taxi driver’s account is also corroborated by a clinic secretary.

Theodoropoulos reportedly maintains that he had no involvement in the incident because he was away from his clinic. According to his account, he had three other patient appointments that day and had left the clinic around the critical time to have lunch. He reportedly learned about the incident from his wife while he was away and rushed back. He himself then performed CPR on Mazonakis and administered two injections of adrenaline.

However, CCTV footage reportedly shows that Theodoropoulos, an internal medicine specialist and owner of Stem Cell, entered the restaurant at 1:59 p.m. and left at 2:43 p.m.

The timeline is crucial

The timing is significant. The lawyer representing the late singer, Charalampos Lykoudis, speaking to ANT1 and citing evidence contained in the case file, argued that Ioanna Gaka’s claim that the singer collapsed before the medical procedure was carried out is contradicted by the evidence.

“The machine’s software showed that it had been operating for 42 minutes, with a start time of 2:12 p.m. That means 2:12 plus 42 minutes brings us to 2:54 p.m. This means that Giorgos Mazonakis had lost consciousness an hour and a half before the EMS was called. This is terrible and chilling. And this was done by doctors,” Lykoudis said.

For this reason, the Mazonakis family’s lawyer asked the investigating magistrate to upgrade the charge from endangerment resulting in death to homicide with possible intent.

Protothema.gr also reported that, during the intervening period, Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka allegedly attempted to erase evidence of Giorgos Mazonakis’s presence at the clinic, while simultaneously using artificial intelligence to search for ways to revive him.

Contradictions in the doctors’ accounts

These allegations are compounded by contradictions in the statements given by the two doctors facing felony charges.

One of the key discrepancies concerns the amount of time Mazonakis remained in the room containing the machine. Ioanna Gaka testified that the singer had been in the treatment area for only a very short period and that the machine had not yet been switched on.

This version is contradicted in the case file by the testimony of secretary M., who said that Mazonakis had been in the treatment room for at least 42 minutes. The Greek police themselves reportedly identify this as one of the case’s key contradictions.

A nurse at the clinic also testified that at around 3 p.m. the singer entered the treatment area, remained for approximately half an hour in the doctor’s main office, and then went with her to the room containing the INUS PHERESIS machine, where the scheduled treatment was to take place.

Gaka herself stated that Mazonakis lay down on the bed and was connected to equipment monitoring his vital signs. She said she inserted an intravenous catheter and that, while attempting to insert a second one, he suffered cardiac arrest, at which point she began CPR.

What staff said about Mazonakis when he arrived

The statements from staff at the Stem Cell clinic in Kolonaki provide further details about the singer’s final hours.

Ioanna Gaka said that Mazonakis had called her shortly after 5 p.m. the previous day to seek advice because he was unable to cope with his professional commitments. They arranged an appointment, and he visited her clinic at 7 p.m. that Tuesday evening.

She described their conversation, saying that she had conducted an electrophysiological examination using equipment at her clinic and concluded that he was in a very poor condition. When she asked him about how he was feeling, he reportedly replied: “You can’t imagine.” He also told her that he was taking diuretics because he felt that he was retaining fluids.

“He had a strange cough, was extremely agitated and couldn’t stand for very long. In the end, he asked me what we could do immediately to save the event. I told him that something quick that removes chemical or toxic substances is the treatment performed with the INUS PHERESIS machine, which is a blood-cleansing treatment,” she testified.

According to Gaka, the treatment involves the patient lying on a bed while two peripheral veins are accessed. Blood is gradually removed, passed through the machine and then returned to the body through the second vein. She said the treatment normally lasts two to three hours.

Gaka said they scheduled an appointment for the following day at 3 p.m., but claimed that the singer arrived an hour late. That claim is contradicted by the taxi driver’s testimony and CCTV footage.

She said that her husband, Ilias Theodoropoulos, a nurse and the clinic secretary were also present.

According to her account, she began preparing Mazonakis for the procedure and observed that he “had not slept, was restless, had the same cough as the previous day and had worse speech,” although he did not report any health problem. She said he lay down, was fitted with ECG electrodes and had his oxygen level, temperature and blood pressure checked, all of which she said were normal.

One of the nurses described Mazonakis as seeming “somewhat out of it” and “a little disoriented.” She said that although he was as polite and soft-spoken as always, his condition appeared somewhat worse than on previous occasions when she had seen him.

The clinic secretary, broadly supporting Gaka’s account, said the appointment had been scheduled for between 1 and 1:30 p.m., but claimed that Mazonakis arrived at around 3:30 p.m. She said that approximately 45 minutes later, after Theodoropoulos had repeatedly entered and left the room where the singer suffered cardiac arrest, she was asked to call EMS.

She added that when he arrived that day, he “seemed a little strange,” appeared somewhat disoriented and had a large adhesive patch on his forehead.

Another nurse gave a similar account: “His gaze was not focused or concentrated,” she testified. She estimated that Mazonakis arrived at around 3 p.m., remained in the area for approximately half an hour and then went with Ioanna Gaka to the room containing the INUS PHERESIS machine, where his scheduled treatment was to take place.

The report by the special committee of the Athens Medical Association

The findings of a special committee of the Athens Medical Association also played a decisive role in establishing the allegations against the two doctors.

The three-member committee visited the clinic on Karneadou Street and examined two plasmapheresis machines. According to doctor Ioanna Gaka, one had been installed in 2021 and the second in 2026. The premises also contained vital-sign monitoring equipment and saline solutions.

Gaka told the committee that she was Giorgos Mazonakis’s treating physician and that the artist had been placed on the newer machine for treatment.

An examination of the machine’s operating history showed that it had been running for 42 minutes on Wednesday afternoon.

The committee then asked the doctor to demonstrate how the machine operated and record the relevant findings. However, during the demonstration, the machine recorded zero operating time, despite all the necessary steps having been carried out.

According to the evidence in the case file, this finding raises serious questions about whether the procedure had actually begun and lasted 42 minutes — something that, if established, would undermine the and is expected to attract the authorities’ attention is that, according to the investigation by the Athens Security Police and the medical committee inspection, the Athens Medical Association committee concluded that the clinics operated by Theodoropoulos and Gaka were providing healthcare services in violation of the doctor’s claim that the singer collapsed before the procedure began.

No prior cardiac assessment

Another issue that has raised concerns and is expected to attract the authorities’ attention is that, according to the investigation by the Athens Security Police and the medical committee, the medical records of patients who had undergone plasmapheresis contained no prior cardiac assessment or ECG, despite the fact that invasive procedures — namely plasmapheresis treatments — were being performed.

Based on the findings of its inspection, the Athens Medical Association committee concluded that the clinics operated by Theodoropoulos and Gaka were providing healthcare services in violation of the law.

The relevant legislation prohibits primary healthcare facilities from providing medical services that, under the rules of medical and dental science, fall exclusively within the scope of secondary healthcare — including plasmapheresis treatment.
