“Achilles’ Shield”: How Greece’s new air defence umbrella is taking shape

Giannis Charamidis & Marinos Aleiferis explain why the agreement with Israel is far more than a missile purchase - Israel’s SPYDER, BARAK MX and David’s Sling systems will be linked into a single operational picture

Greece is not simply buying three new anti-aircraft systems. With the ‘Achilles’ Shield’, it is seeking, for the first time, to create a unified air defence mechanism capable of detecting, assessing and intercepting different threats – from drones and cruise missiles to ballistic missiles – through a common battlefield picture.

At the heart of the design are SPYDER, BARAK MX and David’s Sling. The significance of the agreement, however, lies not only in the capabilities of each system individually. It lies primarily in how they will be connected, how radars will communicate with command centers, and how decisions will be made in real time about which threat needs to be addressed, with which weapon and from which location.

The choice of Israel adds another dimension. These systems have been used in real-world combat conditions against large-scale attacks involving drones and missiles. For Greece, this experience is particularly significant, as military planning cannot ignore Turkey’s major investment in unmanned systems, ballistic missiles and mass-attack capabilities designed to overwhelm air defences.

The problem in such an environment is no longer the interception of a single target. It is what happens when dozens of different threats appear on the radar simultaneously and the system has to decide within seconds which ones to engage and which ones not to.

In this report, we examine exactly what the ‘Achilles’ Shield’ includes, how the new air defence architecture is designed to operate, and why the agreement with Israel goes far beyond a simple missile purchase.

Particular emphasis is also placed on an issue that is rarely at the centre of public debate: control of the command system and the source code. The question is not simply whether Greece will possess effective weapons. It is whether it will be able to integrate them, adapt them and develop the ‘Shield’ itself without having to depend on the manufacturer each time.

The agreement’s true value will ultimately be judged not only by what David’s Sling, BARAK or SPYDER can shoot down, but by whether all these systems can actually operate as a single, integrated Greek air defence system.
