French President Emmanuel Macron announced today that Paris will convene a G7 meeting focused on “energy issues”, to be held within “the coming weeks”, in order to “make progress on better coordination regarding stock levels”.

This meeting should help “avoid unnecessary tensions between G7 member states and our main partners” and also “review options for the potential release of strategic reserves”, the French president said after a meeting at the Élysée Palace with party leaders and presidential candidates.

Macron confirmed that he is working to secure diesel and natural gas supplies, indicating that France is “at the expected appropriate storage level and will ensure that reservoirs are full this winter”.

At the same time, the French president said France had been threatened by Russian hybrid attacks in recent weeks, and that these attacks would not go unanswered by Europeans, adding that Russia would be “making a mistake” if it “continues to act in this way”.

He added that he would “liaise” today with the President of the European Commission on the issue of gas storage at European level, as well as “on speeding up all possible flexibility measures to reduce our prices and the energy price structure”.

“In recent weeks, the threat, particularly the Russian hybrid threat, facing Europeans and France has intensified,” Macron said.

“The intention behind these attacks is to intimidate us and undermine efforts to support the Ukrainians. The result will be the opposite,” the French president stressed, citing as an example the discovery of a drone loaded with explosives at Leipzig airport this summer.

“We are not intimidated because we know that our security today and in the future is at stake in Ukraine,” he added.
