The United States has denied entry visas to some members of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s delegation, which is expected to leave Iran tomorrow, Tuesday, to attend the UN General Assembly in New York.

“In an unprecedented hostile measure by the US administration, Donald Trump refused to grant entry visas to certain members of the president’s high-level delegation, including his communications team,” the state-run Irna news agency reported.

The Mehr news agency also reported the development, citing presidential spokesman Habibollah Abbasi, and clarifying that Pezeshkian will address the UN General Assembly on Wednesday and return to Tehran on Saturday.

The United States has allowed the Iranian delegation to travel to the UN headquarters in New York despite the ongoing conflict, but it will be subject, as it was last year, to restrictions on its movements.

The delegation will not be allowed to purchase luxury goods or other items, the US State Department said on Thursday, adding that the delegation is “smaller than last year”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who is part of the delegation, left Iran on Sunday evening and stopped in Qatar, which is mediating in the war.

Nothing has been made known about the stop, as Iran says it has once again conveyed to the US, through Qatar’s mediation, its conditions for reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which is at the centre of the conflict between Tehran and Washington.

Traffic through the waterway, through which one-fifth of the world’s hydrocarbons passed before the war, has been significantly reduced by Tehran since the war began.

For their part, the US is imposing a blockade on Iranian ports.
