The Houthis claimed responsibility today for a new launch of missiles and drones against the capital of Saudi Arabia, which Riyadh said were intercepted, as it also seeks to confront the pro-Iranian fighters in neighboring Yemen.
“Our armed forces targeted the international airport with a missile; the strike was accurate, praise be to God, and caused air traffic at the airport to be suspended,” Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said in a post on X, after reporting overnight attacks on military targets in southern Saudi Arabia.
Shortly before the Houthis’ announcement, Riyadh had said that it intercepted a missile north of the capital, where the airport is located, which was targeted earlier this week.
According to the Flightradar24 website, disruptions to air traffic are frequent, while the Houthis have warned airlines that Saudi Arabia’s skies are not “safe.”
The conflict between the Houthis, who have controlled Yemen’s capital, Sana’a, and large parts of the country for more than 10 years, and the internationally recognized government, which is backed by Riyadh, flared up again in July after years of relative calm and developed into the new front in the war in the Middle East.
