Juan Carlos, the King of Spain, abdicated paving the way for his son Prince Felipe to succeed him and Felipe became the new king of Spain yesterday at midnight.

Juan Carlos, signed the decree on Wednesday at a ceremony held at the Royal Palace in Madrid where only 160 guests were present passing the throne to his son, Felipe.

The two major parties of Spain, center-right People’s Party and the center-left Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, supported the succession.
