With clashes developing over the weekend, Sudan once again finds itself in the grip of a political conflict. Sudan has a long and stories history of coups – the last of which occurred as recently as October 2021, putting the current ‘Transitional Sovereignty Council’ into power. Around 100 people are reported to have died so far in the fighting between the Sudan army and paramilitary rivals the Rapid Support Forces.
As research from the Center for Systemic Peace (CSP) and Statista shows, there have been 35 coup d’état (including failed attempts and plots) in Sudan’s history. Only six have been successful.
