Alexandroupolis Fire Front: The hospital & villages are being evacuated, people gather in the squares (videos-photos)

Authorities ready to transport up to 220 patients

The fire is raging in Evros, with the night forecast to be fierce, with evacuations of settlements and people gathering in the squares.

An evacuation of the General University Hospital of Alexandroupolis is planned, in case there is need, however, their relatives have already been called and are picking up those patients who can be discharged.

Health care units of the neighboring prefectures are on heightened alert to receive patients.

Based on valid information, the Deputy Minister of Health Marios Themistokleous rushed to Alexandroupolis by military aircraft, in order to coordinate the whole operation.

According to information, some patients have already entered buses and ambulances, while the police are assisting with two vehicles and four officers.

It takes up to seven hours to complete the evacuation process, mainly for patients and newborns, who will reportedly be directed to the Kavala hospital.

Earlier the flames burning in the area of industrial area threatened initially and later entered the nearby villages.

In Avanda, despite the fire zones and the efforts of the firefighters, the fire entered the village in the evening.

At the same time, the villages of Aisymi, Palagia and Kirki, which are located near areas where the fire continues its destructive work, were evacuated as a precaution.

At 21:30′ an order was given to evacuate the settlements of Pylaia, Melia and Koila as a precaution as well.

At 22:52′, the 112 emergency number informed the residents of Palinostuntes Palagia settlement to evacuate to Alexandroupolis.

Citizens who do not have access to a means of transport are urged to go in an organized manner to the squares of the settlements, where there will be buses called by the Municipality of Alexandroupolis.

Also, the 112 called the citizens of Alexandroupolis to stay indoors and close the doors and windows of their houses.

A total of seven firefighters and one volunteer have been injured.

214 men of the Fire Department with 59 vehicles, 11 groups of pedestrian units, and volunteers, water tankers and machines, as well as the Hellenic Army, are still on site operating.

In Rodopi, 23 firefighters with 11 water vehicles are working to extinguish the fire in Ano Drosini, and in Mischos, eight firefighters with four water vehicles are working.

There are at least 5 or 6 houses that were burned in the village of Sostis, as the deputy governor of Rodopis, Nikos Tsalikidis, pointed out while speaking to the Athenian-Macedonian News Agency.

He clarified that in the area there are two fire fronts in Mischos and Ano Drosini and stated that “the fire has reached uncontrollable proportions and has spread to the mountain mass to the west”.
