Benaki Museum hosts an exhibition dedicated to the Master and Academician Dimitris Mytaras, whose presence honored as much the Greek and international art scene, as well as the Athens School of Fine Arts. The exhibition opened on February 2 and it is scheduled to run until March 8.
Mytaras is considered one of the important Greek painters of the 20th century.
His work is mainly inspired by the human figure, and a combination of naturalism and expressionism. From the 1960s onward, Mytaras moved in the direction of Critical Realism, while from 1975 an expressionistic approach became more and more marked in his output.
The acclaimed painter served as Professor to the School of Fine Arts from 1975 until 2001, where he was initially appointed as director of the preparatory course of the School and then as director of the Painting I studio.
During his time at the Preparatory course he collaborated with: Martinos Gavathas, Lefteris Kanakis, Hariklia Mytara, Thymios Panourgias, Rena Papaspyrou and Triantafillos Patraskides, whilst at the studio with: Angelos Antonopoulos, Zacharia Arvati, Dimitris Koukos, Rena Papaspyrou and Magda Siamkouri.
This exhibition was an initiative of all his co-workers at the School of Fine Arts. The works on show reflect on all of the important periods of his creative trail, from his teenager years up to today, such as “Mirrors” 1960-1964, “Dictatorship” 1966-1970, “Funerary” 1971-1976, “Portraits” 1977-1987 and “Theatre Scenes” 1988-1991.
Duration: 05/02/2015 – 08/03/2015
