British Museum: Greek side reluctant to loan out artefact

The Museum of Cycladic Art isn’t responding to the British Museum’s requests for a loan

The Museum of Cycladic Art is dragging its heels regarding the loan of an ancient artifact to the British Museum (BM) for an upcoming exhibition. A BM spokesperson told the “Art Newspaper” that the BM had requested to borrow a piece for the exhibition titled “Defining Beauty: The Body in Ancient Greek Art” but the Greek museum had yet to respond one way or another as to whether they would contribute to the exhibition that runs from March 6 to June 22.

It should be noted that the Greek cultural world had become outraged by a BM decision to loan out the marbles for the first time to the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. This had been the first time that an artefact from the controversial collection had left the BM since 1816. Now that the precedent has been set, the BM is considering three more overseas loans from the stolen Parthenon Marbles.
