The elections for the new leader of New Democracy party were postponed due to major technical problems in the online registration system of voters which could not be fixed.

The decision for cancelling today’s election process was taken by Central Electoral Commission three hours after the scheduled start of the voting process, while current president of ND Vangelis Meimarakis had submitted a request for postponing the elections, warning of withdrawing his candidacy if the voting process started with registering voters manually.

Although the official statement issued by New Democracy puts the blame on the private company responsible for managing and organizing the voting process, many members of ND party, as well as the other candidates, blame the Secretary of the Political Committee, Andreas Papamimikos, who chairs Central Electoral Commission, too.

However, the candidates accused also current president Vangelis Meimarakis saying that since July the only thing he was interested in was his candidacy devoting his efforts to his election campaign and ignoring his responsibilities as president.

Candidates Apostolos Tzitzikostas and Kyriakos Mitsotakis asked directly the resignation of Vangelis Meimarakis, while Adonis Georgiadis raised indirectly the issue of Meimarakis’s resignation.
