Countdown: ND leadership race is on with fueds to the end

Former PM K. Karamanlis has cast a shadow over candidates with speculation regarding his support

The conservative main opposition New Democracy (ND) is on the road to electing a new leader on December 20 amid controversy, a failed election round and speculation concerning candidates mulling the prospect of dropping out. New strife was caused after former interim leader Evangelos Meimarakis said he had the silent support of former ND prime minister Kostas Karamanlis. “I consider it my honor that Kostas Karamanlis has let it be assumed that he supports me,” he said. A possible involvement by Karamanlis prompted turbulence with the other three candidates denying this.

“If Karamanlis supports Meimarakis, it would be good for him to come out and say this in public,” said ND leadership candidate Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “What he doesn’t say publically, I believe is not stated at all. The problems with former prime ministers begin when others begin to speak on their behalf.” The remaining two leadership candidates Adonis Georgiadis and Apostolos Tzitzikostas also said words in that direction.

“Whoever truly respects Kostas Karamanlis should protect him,” said Georgiadis, doubting the veracity of statements made by Meimarakis.

On his part, Meimarakis maintains that he has the support of Meimarakis while also claiming that former prime minister Antonis Samaras has shown that he doesn’t support his candidacy, choosing to support Tzitzikostas and then, the bid by Georgiadis.
