Covid pandemic lowers libido and affects women’s menstrual cycle, new study says

According to the researchers, one of the causes could be the “unprecedented psychological burden”

Newsroom December 21 06:15

It is a little considered aspect of the pandemic, but it can have serious repercussions, even in the long term. Because these almost two years of Covid have also impacted the sexual health of women, already the most penalized from a psychological and social point of view.

A study from Trinity College Dublin sought to delineate the consequences and found that over half of the women surveyed experienced menstrual changes, decreased libido and sleep quality, as well as episodes of anxiety, which obviously resulted in negatively affected sexual and couple life.

According to the researchers, one of the causes could be the “unprecedented psychological burden” that women have experienced since February 2020.

The Trinity College team surveyed 1,300 women in April of this year, investigating their menstrual cycles (any abnormalities, skipped or heavier-than-usual cycles, premenstrual symptoms), sleep quality, and levels of anxiety and depression. 56% said their periods had changed since the start of the pandemic (lengthening or shortening), nearly two-thirds noticed more intense premenstrual symptoms, and 54% admitted to feeling less sex drive.

Twice as many reported cases of anxiety and depression were reported before the pandemic. The research was presented at the annual congress of the British Society of Endocrinology in Edinburgh, but it has limitations: “It is an online-only survey and these questions usually answer more those who suffer from problems than those who are well – he observes Rossella Nappi, professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Pavia – And it should be emphasized that this is not permanent damage, but transient and reversible disorders.”
