Cyprus: Consistent stance of non-recognition of Kosovo

"We do not recognize the unilaterally declared independence," says the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus

Newsroom April 18 01:40

Cyprus remains consistent with its longstanding positions on the Kosovo issue, as stated to the Cyprus News Agency by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Theodoros Gotsis.

Asked to comment on the majority approval by the Plenary of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) of the relevant opinion on the issue of Kosovo’s accession to the Council of Europe (CoE), Mr. Gotsis noted that Cyprus remains consistent with its longstanding positions, “fully committed to respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states.”

Therefore, he added, “it does not recognize the unilaterally declared independence.”

“Our position was expressed at the Council of Europe through the statements of the representatives of Cyprus in the Parliamentary Assembly, an issue that was also raised during last year’s debate, when we also voted against,” he noted.

At the same time, Mr. Gotsis stated, Cyprus fully supports the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue under the auspices of the EU. It should be noted that the final decision on Kosovo’s accession to the CoE depends on the Council of Ministers of the CoE.

According to an announcement by the Cypriot House of Representatives, during the proceedings of the 2nd Session of the PACE for 2024, it was approved by 131 members, while 29 members opposed it, and 11 members abstained, with members of the Cypriot delegation, George Loucaides and Christiana Erotokritou, voting against the Opinion.
