5.3R Quake jolts Greece at dawn on Tuesday

An earthquake rattled Athens at 4.09 a.m. on Tuesday

An earthquake rattled Greece at 4.09 a.m. at the sea region at the North Evoiko Gulf, 27 km north of Halkida, the capital of Evia. The magnitude 5.3R quake could be felt around many areas of the greater Athens region and lasted for a few minutes. The quake was 77 km northwest of Athens. It was initially believed to have a 5-km focal point, though this was later estimated at 13km.

Another quake was felt at 5.31 a.m. at 3.3R, and then again at 6.04  a.m. at 3.4R. The metaseismic activity was mainly felt around Evia, especially Halkida.

Seismologist Efthymios Lekkas said that the quake was of normal magnitude for the area with the particular fault line producing earthquakes of as much as 5.5R. The last earthquake felt in the region was noted on November 18, 2014.
