EgyptAir flight MS804: Search operation still in progress

Egyptian Aviation Minister said that that a terrorist attack “was more likely” to have taken down the missing EgyptAir flight than any other cause

The first day of the search and rescue operation concluded with no signs of the missing EgyptAir flight MS804 which was carrying 66 people from Paris to Cairo and disappeared from radar on Thursday morning while flying over the Mediterranean Sea and just half an hour before landing.

EgyptAir initially claimed debris and life jackets belonging to MS804 had been found near the Greek island of Karpathos, east of Crete, about 50 miles from where the plane’s radar signal was lost. But, airline vice-president Ahmed Adel later said “we stand corrected” adding that the recovered debris “is not our aircraft”, the Guardian reports.

Nobody knows yet if this was a terrorist attack or a technical failure, but the Airbus A320 is considered safe and reliable in the industry to serve short- or medium-haul destinations. Moreover, Egyptian Aviation Minister Sherif Fathy told journalists the plane was in good technical condition and had passed all necessary safety checks, as RT reports.

Mr. Fathy also said that that a terrorist attack “was more likely” to have taken down the missing EgyptAir flight than any other cause.

“The possibility of having a different action or a terror attack, is higher than the possibility of having a technical failure,” he said urging, though, people not to draw any premature conclusions about the crash.

The search and rescue operation is still in progress with Egypt, France and Greece having joined forces in military aircraft and ships.
