EU: New mission to help Italy on the issue of immigrants

The terms and details of the mission are expected to be agreed by the EU states within the next few days

The European Commission announced the launch of a new operation in the Mediterranean in order to help Italy to cope with the massive influx of irregular migrants and asked the State Member to provide the necessary resources for this.

The operation is called FRONTEX + and will allow the company Mare Nostrum to stop gradually, a development of large-scale, which Rome decided after the many deaths on two wrecks that had occurred in October of 2013. The Italian government had warned about its discontinuance in October this year.

The decision of the European Commission announced the European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ms Cecilia Malmstrem, which met earlier with the Italian Minister of Interior Mr. Angelino Alfano.

Rome had multiplied in recent days the calls for European assistance as about 300 more migrants died in the Mediterranean only last weekend.

The Commission ‘hopes that the mission will take action at the end of November ” .
The Italian Minister of Interior stated that “Our goal is FRONTEX + to replace the Mare Nostrum». Once this venture begins, Rome “will gradually begin to withdraw” its own naval forces, he added.

Further, he said that: “State Member shall provide resources, aircraft, ships, in order to be able to guard the European borders as well as possible”.

The terms and details of the mission are expected to be agreed by the EU states within the next few days.
