EU to stop travel from South African region due to deadly Covid variant

The highly infectious mutation of Botswana has been identified in South Africa, Hong Kong, and Botswana

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement that she “proposes, in close coordination with the member states, to activate the emergency brake to stop air travel from the southern African region”, following the concerning emergence of the new deadly Covid strain Β.1.1.529 in African regions.

The new threatening and, according to experts, highly infectious mutation of Botswana has been identified in South Africa, Hong Kong, and Botswana. The very concerning development is that today it was announced that it was also detected in Israel! The new variant, according to the Israeli Ministry of Health, was found in a person who returned to Israel from Malawi.
