Female Naval cadet, 19, unexpectedly dies of unknown causes

She was at sea on a training course

A female naval cadet died suddenly during the Summer Training Course of the Naval Cadet School, the Naval General Staff announced.

158 cadets participated in the sailing training on two ships, the frigate “Kanaris” and the general support ship “Prometheus” (the largest ship in the fleet).

The 19-year-old cadet, who had just finished her first year of school, was aboard the “Prometheus”.

On Tuesday, she developed a fever and was immediately given anti-fever medicine and antibiotics, but the symptoms persisted. The two ships were headed for Naples, however, due to the girl’s illness, the course of the ships was sped up. As soon as they arrived in the Italian city, the cadet was admitted to the hospital.

Yesterday, the girl’s clinical picture deteriorated rapidly and she was admitted to the ICU.

Doctors from Greece also went to Italy, but the girl died in the morning hours today. Her family was immediately informed, while her body will come to Greece by C-130.

Specifically, the General Staff of the Navy, in its statement, “The exact cause of death is being investigated. The Naval General Staff expresses its sorrow for the loss of the Naval Cadet and our sincere condolences to her family and loved ones.”
