Fire in island of Andros – Message 112 for evacuation of the village of Gides (video-photos)

Lightning caused two fire fronts on the island (in the areas of Vitali and near the holy monastery of Zoodochos Pigi)

The battle with the flames continues on the island of Andros, while strong winds of up to seven Beaufort are blowing on the island. According to an update from the Fire Department, reinforcements from Athens are expected on the island. These are forces that will arrive from Rafina with the ferry of the line at 19:30 in the afternoon.

It is noted that two fire fronts are in progress, in the areas of Vitali and near the holy monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, while firefighting forces have been mobilized. Currently, 21 firefighters with seven vehicles, a helicopter, and two aircraft are operating.

The fires were probably caused by lightning, they were burning low vegetation and their outbreaks were located on the mountain above the two settlements. No residential area is threatened.

At 14:32 on Saturday afternoon, a 112 warning message was sent, stating: “If you are in the area of Gides, move away towards the port of Gavrio. Forest fire in your area!!!! Follow the instructions of the authorities”.

The Fire Service was informed of the fire outbreak at 10 o’clock in the morning.

It will be recalled that the island was at the centre of the “dry storm”, with the area being hit by too much lightning in recent hours.

Multiple outbreaks, also due to lightning, broke out this morning in East Attica and Chios but were dealt with in time.
