Former ND PM criticizes SYRIZA’s investigation into Greek debt

Former conservative prime minister A. Samaras warned the SYRIZA-ANEL coalition government of trying to create division rather than unity in the country

The Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) government and its junior coalition partner, Independent Greeks (ANEL), tabled the proposal for an investigative committee on Greek debt. Former conservative New Democracy prime minister Antonis Samaras was critical of this move in Parliament on Sunday, stating that it was tabled to cover up the complete disappointment of Greek people’s expectations in the leftist government.

Samaras warned the government to stop working to divide the country at a time when there is no liquidity.

The former PM also said that the investigation should cover the period from 1981 onwards and also include the current government. He accused the government of its creation of a new memorandum that he labeled as a “fatal accident.”

4 periods to be covered by the investigative committee

1) October 2009-May 2010: The period when the country entered the memorandum with the government of former socialist PASOK prime minister George Papandreou.

2) May 2010-November 2011: The period in which the country signed the second bailout under the government of former social PASOK prime minister George Papandreou.

3) November 2011-May 2012: The period when the interim government of Lucas Papademos implemented the PSI.

4) May 2012 onwards: The handling of the conservative New Democracy government of former prime minister Antonis Samaras
