Dorothy King dreams of Parthenon Marbles together in Athens

Dorothy King feels that the Parthenon Marbles, stolen by Lord Elgin, are ambassadors for Greek civilization

Outspoken archeologist Dorothy King told Proto Thema that the dream of her lifetime would be to see the Parthenon Marbles all together in Greece.

She said this would be like a “huge middle finger lifted to jihadists” and all those trying to ruin the cultural heritage of humanity. A “renegade” archeologist, known also for her extensive blogging activities, has been called by critics as the “Sex & the City archeologist” and even labeled by a few hot-head critics in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYRoM)as a “Greek whore”.

Her infusions of strokes of irony in her texts and style that makes archeology palatable for laypeople is sometimes looked down upon, and yet she is extremely popular for doing just that.

In her exclusive interview for Proto Thema, she spoke with Vasilis Tsakiroglou. She said:

On the Parthenon Marbles:

“To be honest, I’m not optimistic that there can be progress with the current director of the Britsih Museum, Neil MacGregor, he is definite in his views. He prefers to leak information instead of discussing a loan. That’s why I don’t think something can be done. I know, however, that there are British ministers that support the Greek side. And as the British Museum says, the Parthenon Marbles are not its property, they belong to the British people. That is why I think that the Greek side shouldn’t waste time with requests etc, but politically persuade, through a private members bill etc.,” says King.

She believes that individuals can’t do anything, however groups and circles of people can. Nobody would have said “no” to a loan from the British Museums during the Olympic Games. King believes that this would be a win-win situation. She says that the Parthenon Marbles are ambassadors for the Greek people and civilization.
