Frontex officials to arrive at Idomeni – Residents threaten with mobilizations

“We will not let another bus come to Idomeni. The situation cannot go on forever,” the residents say

Frontex agency is preparing to send to Greece-FYROM buffer zone officials who would be responsible for the registration of the refugees to be granted asylum.

Greece asked to enable the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, the rapid border intervention teams (RABIT) and has signed an agreement to receive Frontex’s assistance on its northern borders, fulfilling 3 out of its 4 basic obligations in the framework of Greece’s participation in Schengen zone and in relation to the protection of EU’s external borders.

In the meantime, the residents of Idomeni village, located near the borders with FYROM, where a lot of migrants have stalled, announced their intention to proceed with mobilisations if a solution is not immediately found.

As they said, they have run out of patience and the issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible.

“Unless refugees have left by Tuesday, we will call for mobilisations,” the president of the local community Xanthoula Soupli said.

“At first we didn’t have any problem. But, now we stay home, locked inside. They have entered our yards, stolen chickens, burned furniture to get warm, the situation is serious” she said adding that the residents helped the immigrants with clothes, food, etc, but now they have run out of patience.

“We will not let another bus come to Idomeni. The situation cannot go on forever,” she added.
