German Finance Ministry has modest expectations for EWG conference call

“At best, the country expects an interim assessment of Greece’s situation,” Martin Jaeger said

A spokesman for the German finance ministry said on Wednesday that Germany doesn’t expect much from the conference call of euro zone Deputy Finance Ministers scheduled for this afternoon.

“At best, the country expects an interim assessment of Greece’s situation,” Martin Jaeger said, according to Reuters.

“In the best case scenario we expect there could be some kind of preliminary interim review but it’s hard to predict how things will develop next week,” he told the press.

The Euroworking Group is hosting a teleconference at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Government sources have confirmed Greece’s willingness to reach an agreement with the country’s EU creditors on the basis of a framework that does not involve austerity measures so that the economy can be rebooted.

So far, meetings with the Brussels Group have been conducted in a cordial climate with a mutual desire for an agreement, say government sources. The same sources state that both sides intend to intensify the fact-finding process underway in Athens.
