Giorgia Meloni’s new government sworn in (video)

She is the first female PM of Italy

Italy’s first woman prime minister has been sworn in as the country is led by a far-right government for the first time since the Second World War. Ms Meloni, 45, took the oath of office at the Quirinale Presidential Palace in Rome on Saturday, witnessed by the Italian President Serio Mattarella.

The new leader has shared a live stream of the new government taking the oath on social media. Ms Meloni recited the ritual oath of office, promising to act “in the interests of the nation”. “I swear to be faithful to the republic,” she said, before shaking hands with President Sergio Mattarella.

Ms Meloni’s 24 cabinet ministers, six of whom are women, also took the oath. They are due to assemble for the newly-elected PM’s first Cabinet meeting on Sunday after she replaced predecessor Mario Draghi.
