Govt Spokesman G. Sakellaridis informs press on negotiations

Government Spokesman Gavriil Sakellaridis states that negotiations are continuing at a political level

Negotiations are continuing in Brussels on Monday, says Government Spokesman Gavriil Sakellaridis. A Greek delegation headed by Greek State Minister Nikos Pappas and Alt. Foreign Minister for International Economic Affairs Euclid Tsakalotos are in Brussels for meetings. The goal is to bring convergence between the Greek government and the country’s creditors.

“The main issue of the negotiations is to have a medium-term settlement of the financing gap and liquidity and to reach one single agreement,” he said. “The extension of the deal alone does not meet the Greek society’s needs.”

The government spokesman refered to the debt issue that was raised by the Greek government through the tabling of a specific proposal sent to the institutions. Regarding the VAT on islands, he said that it is included in the government’s proposals.

Sakellaridis said that the 5-page proposals sent by Greece’s creditors could not be accepted by the Greek side. He said that the phone call reportedly made by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker never took place. He added that there are contacts at a lower level between Greek and European Commission employees.

Asked what the government awaits from Wednesday’s meeting of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, Sakellaridis expressed his hope that the efforts for a solution acceptable for the government and the institutions will prevail.

Asked about the possibility of early elections, he stressed that the recourse to the polls has not crossed the government’s minds.
