Greece: Ministry of Education’s report on incidents against places of religious significance

More than 500 attacks - 97.7% of them are against the Orthodox Churches!

The “Report on Incidents against places of religious importance in Greece” that took place in the year 2022 by the Department of Religious Freedoms and Interreligious Relations was published.

In the Introductory part of the Report, the historical and current institutional framework of the General Secretariat of Religions is presented, as well as the institutional framework governing the protection of religious freedom in Greece, with special reference to the construction and operation of places of worship. Next, reference is made to the Incident Recording Network, the types of places of religious significance that were taken into account are identified and a list of cooperating religious and government agencies is provided.

The main body of the Report is the second part, which lists all kinds of incidents against places of religious importance, which came to the knowledge of the Service, by religious community, accompanied by historical, legal and statistical data as the case may be.

In total, for the year 2022, 577 incidents against places of religious importance were recorded.

It is worth mentioning that 567 incidents of all kinds (vandalism, burglary, theft, robbery, sacrilege, tomb raiding, arson and etc.) were reported against Christian churches.
