Greece receives formal request by Turkey for extradition of ‘8’

Turkish men deny all accusations

The Greek Foreign Ministry received the official formal request by the Turkish authorities for the extradition of 8 Turkish military officers. The 8 men had landed in the northern Greek city of Alexandroupolis on July 16 in a military helicopter, a day after the coup attempt in Turkey and are accused of involvement in the overthrow of the legal Turkish government. The military officers deny the accusations and have applied for political asylum in Greece fearing their lives would be in danger if they returned to Turkey. Pro-Erdogan newspaper ‘Star’ has alleged the men were linked to the group of special commando forces who were see circling the resort of Turkish President Recep Erdogan to assassinate him.
