Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis said that Greece stood with Israel, stressing that it had the right to defend itself against “inhumane acts”, referring to Saturday’s attacks by Hamas and the response by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF).
The Greek senior diplomat is in Oman for the Gulf Cooperation Council with the EU.
“The Summit is taking place under extremely adverse conditions, as they are taking shape following the terrorist attack from Gaza to Israel,” Gerapetritis said in a statement, noting that “this attack not only constitutes a violent interference in the sovereignty of a state, it is also an absolutely abhorrent act, based on what we have seen, against the basic principles of humanitarianism.”
The Foreign Minister also noted in his statement: “Greece stands with Israel, which has the right to defend itself against these inhumane acts. I would like to point out that in the framework of the Summit with my counterparts from the Gulf countries, as well as my counterparts from the European Union, we will try to find ways so that the situation that is taking shape can be stopped. In addition, I would like to stress that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Embassy and the Consulate General, is making sure that the Greeks who are in Israel return safely. Already yesterday 90 people returned and the rest who remain will return in the very near future. The Greek State will stand by the people so that they can be safely repatriated.”
