Greek aquaculture to double by 2030 in fish wars with Turkey

The industry wants to be a force to be reckoned with

Greece hopes to double its aquaculture production by 2030 in order to successfully compete with Turkey. The Federation of Greek Maricultures (FGM) reports that aqua production volumes could reach 235,000 metric tons in 15 years’ time, an amount that would be valued at €1.2 billion. The FGM states that this would allow Greece to become a leader in the Mediterranean aquaculture market and create up to 3,000 new jobs.

In order to achieve  these goals there needs to be a focus on strengthening the competitiveness of the industry through the creation of a national strategy, with an emphasis on the promotion of the Greek product quality characteristics. The FGM states that therehas never been a comprehensive national promotional campaign, as they have either been too corporate, or co-financed programs limited to very specific actions.
