Greek archaeological sites and their city links

The unique charactersitics of the cities where archaeological sites are located will be further showcased in a new collaboration between the environment and culture ministries of Greece

Environment Minister Yiannis Maniatis said that the Environment, Energy and Climate Change Ministry is setting up working gruops aimed at improving the linking of archaeological sites with their respective cities. The project, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, will initially be set up for the cities of Patras, Argos, Eleusis and Iraklio (Knossos).

The aim is to promote each city’s unique characteristics while respecting its cultural heritage and to reduce energy waste and overconcentration of increased temperatures.

How this will be done:
* through the delineation of protection zones
* by expanding excavations
* through creating corridors for visitors
* improving the stop and parking spaces
* allowing for resting places enroute to sites
* stripping cities of interfering public ad signage
* adding signs pertaining to the archaeological sites
* adding more greenery

Mr. Maniatis said that Athens was the model for a successful linking of sites that also encouraged the improved supervision of the monuments’ condition.
