The image recorded by a photographer is the result of the phenomenon known as Fata Morgana.

The Fata Morgana phenomenon creates a mirage when the sun heats the atmosphere over land or sea, creating a variety of escalating temperatures.

Thus, a layer of hot air “sits” on top of a layer of cold air, creating a vertically inverted mirror image on which the distant object appears to hover.

Therefore, when conditions are ideal, objects (e.g. ships, rocks, etc.) can appear as an apparition, partly in the sky and partly in the sea.
