Greek Orthodox Church destroyed by fire in Montreal

Fire officials told CBC Montreal they still don’t know where the fire started, or what caused it.

A fire broke out last night, at around 8 pm (local time) in a Greek Orthodox Church in Montreal, leaving the historic temple a charred shell.

The Koimisis Tis Theotokou Church, located at the corner of St. Roch Street in Parc Extension was built in 1962. One of four Greek Churches in the area, it was considered an important part of the local Hellenic community and it contained many valuable pieces of art and religious icons.

Fortunately, the church was evacuated on time and no one was injured. However, the temple now appears to be a total loss, according to the local authorities.
