Greeks in crisis: 7 tips for cheaper vacations

Long hot summers need not necessarily be spent at home

Hot summers are unendurable in Greek cities without a vaycay. Unfortunately, since the recession struck, less people have been able to afford a getaway. There are ways to cut costs, however:

1. Don’t go alone
A vacation with good company also means less expenses incurred. Sharing rooms, cars, meals etc can mean less cost.

2. Leave the car
Undoubtedly cars are helpful in getting around, but the cost of paying for your car’s ferry transport makes it wiser to leave it at home and rely on public transport or bicycles.

3. Couchsurfing
Counchsurfing sites allow members to stay as guests in each other’s homes.

4. Camping
More and more Greeks are turning to camping instead of staying at expensive resorts.

5. Don’t travel during peak season
August is to be avoided. Slash costs by traveling in June or September.

6. Isolated regions
Places that are off the beaten track are beautiful and cheaper.

7. Opt for the package deal
Package deals are cheaper than organizing everything yourself.
