Historic Legalization of gay marriage across US

All 50 states are required to follow the Supreme Court’s Decision

The US Supreme Court ruled that the constitution guarantees a right for same-sex couples to marry, a decision that has now made gay marriage legal in all 50 states of the nation.

The court ruled, with a 5-4 vote, that the constitution requires a state to license a marriage between same-sex couples. Each of the dissenting justices wrote a dissent.

In 2013, the Supreme Court turned down the Defense of Marriage act, a decision which prompted a variety of state and federal court cases around the country which upheld the right to marriage for same-sex couples and overturning state bans.

Same-sex marriage was already legal in 36 states and was under dispute in Alabama. Some states, like North Carolina, sought to circumvent rulings that legalized same-sex marriage, where magistrates cited religious reasons as legal cause. No longer, for the Supreme Court reigns…well… Supreme.
