Hollande: Greece’s next government must respect the country’s commitments

On Sunday, the French president will meet with Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss the political and financial developments in Europe

Following media reports of a possible Greek exit from the eurozone, French President Francois Hollande said on Monday that Greece must stick to its European commitments.

“The Greeks are free to choose their own destiny. However, certain commitments have been made and these must of course be respected,” Mr. Hollande told a French radio station.

On Sunday, the French president will meet with Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel to discuss the political and financial developments in Europe. The meeting will also focus on developments in Greece, ahead of the crucial election on January 25.

In the meantime, Germany’s Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said in an interview on Monday that the German government wants Greece to stay in the euro zone and underlined that there are no contingency plans in case of a Grexit.

Mr. Gabriel noted that the euro zone had become more stable in recent years and that is why it can’t be blackmailed.

“We expect the Greek government, no matter which party leads it, to stick to the agreements made with the EU,” he said referring to upcoming elections in Greece.
