Independent MP N. Nikolopoulos’ tweet prompts Luxembourg PM’s reaction

Anti-gay Nikos Nikolopoulos' tactless tweet got retweeted all the way to Luxembourg's pro-gay Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, who asked for a translation

Newsroom August 28 12:37

Luxembourg Democratic Party Prime Minister Xavier Bettel announced last week that he and his male partner would be among the first in the country to take advantage of their recently passed “gay marriage” law. Greek Independent MP Nikos Nikolopoulos, as head of the Christian Democrats, is known for his outspoken views on the topic of gay marriage that he believes “bombs the family” and “imposes the social acceptance of abnormality”.

In order to further support his theories on homosexuality, he chose Bettel as an example, and wrote the following on his Twitter account:

Translation: FROM EUROPE OF NATION STATES... QUEER MATES !!! The Prime Minister of Luxembourg got engaged with his beloved !!

Translation: FROM EUROPE OF NATION STATES… TO QUEER MATES !!! The Prime Minister of Luxembourg got engaged with his beloved !!”

Supporters of the right to gay marriage bombarded Nikolopoulos with comments demanding an explanation. The debate was so intense that the Tweet made its way to Bettel, who wrote:

Bettel is a staunch supporter of people’s rights: “I don’t know how in the States you think about it, but I think in Europe, what is important is that people respect private choices as long as you are honest,” said Bettel in a personal interview that places his view in direct contrast to that of Nikolopoulos.

Nikolopoulos’ response:

The Greek MP didn’t respond personally to Luxembourg’s Prime Minister but he did retweet a more polite version of his previous tweet (still in Greek, but somewhat classier and with a play on words) –

TRANSLATION: From the brutal attacks and barrage of sewerage, I respond: “From the Europe of European Nations to the effeminate”… in other words those who move shame.

In an attempt to deflect responsibility, he explained that the offensive message he was accused of tweeting wasn’t his but copy-pasted from a blog belonging to Kyriakos Tobras.
