India: Train accidentally travelled 70 km without driver

They forgot to put on the brakes and the freight train started rolling downhill

A dangerous turn of events could have taken a dangerous turn when a freight train carrying gravel in northern India travelled without a driver for about 70 kilometres.

The incident occurred on Sunday on a route from Jammu state to Punjab state.

The train, which had 50 wagons, had stopped at a station for crew change, AFP reported.

But it seems they forgot the brake and the train started rolling downhill and from there continued its journey at high speed.

Eventually the train came to a stop when wooden beams were thrown against the tracks, fortunately without injuries or other untoward incidents.

Crossings were closed all along the route to prevent accidents.

The incident will be investigated, authorities stressed.
