Italy earthquake: Video of the moment the tremor struck

Matteo Renzi pledges aid to those affected

Footage from a CCTV camera in supermarket shows the moment the 6.2 magnitude earthquake devastated the village of Amatrice in Italy, which so far has resulted in at least 247 people being killed and over 400 injured. Central Italy has suffered extensive damage with many buildings completely destroyed, while half of Amatrice, the village which was hit the hardest, has been literally turned to rubble. Rescue crews are working to save people believed to be still alive under 10m heaps of concrete slabs. Italian PM Matteo Renzi expressed his support to the families of the victims and the people left homeless in a televised address. ‘No one will be left without help’, he promised, while adding that preparations should be made for a state of emergency over the next days.
