Jailed Nikos Romanos granted permission to attend classes, ends hunger strike

He ended his hunger strike after 31 days

Jailed Nikos Romanos ended his hunger strike on Wednesday after the Justice Minister Haralambos Athanassiou’s amendment was passed by the Greek parliament, allowing the inmate to wear an electronic bracelet to attend classes at a technical institution.

Prior to this amendment, the legal framework for the electronic bracelet didn’t cover those who have been imprisoned for participation in a terrorist group. This legal framework would leave Mr. Romanos in the cold as he has been accused for participation in a terrorist organization.

Mr. Athanassiou’s amendment was unanimously approved by the Greek MPs. It should be noted that, earlier in the day, Greek President Karolos Papoulias spoke on the phone first with main opposition SYRIZA leader and then with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, so as to be briefed on the developments regarding the case and act as a mediator.

According to sources, Tsipras asked Papoulias to assist so that a solution will be found in Romanos’ case.
