Jewish groups are outraged over news concerning the delay in the unveiling of a Holocaust monument in Kavala, northern Greece, due to objections by the local municipal council. The Central Board of Jewish Communities (KIS) in Greece said the Mayor of Kavala objected to the Star of David engraved on the Holocaust monument, which pays tribute to the 1,484 Jews in the area that were exterminated during the Nazi occupation of Greece in WWII.

Members of the Jewish community are outraged by the objection, something they consider “morally reprehensible”. It isn’t just the Greek Jewish community that is appalled.

“As an Orthodox Christian, I feel deeply insulted by this issue, because it would be as if someone asked us to erase or modify for ‘aesthetic reasons’ the symbol of the cross on the tombs of our grandfathers executed by Germans,” said Giorgos Kalantzis, the Secretary General of the Greek Ministry of Culture.
