Jude Law calls for child refugees in Calais migrant camp to be brought to UK

Celebrities have written an open letter to David Cameron urging the prime minister to let the children come to the UK

British actor Jude Law has visited the ‘Jungle’ migrant camp in northern France to highlight the plight of child refugees facing eviction, including a 15-year-old Sudanese boy who fled the conflict in Darfur.

Many British performers accompanied Law including Sir Tom Stoppard who read out literary and historical letters. Migrants living in the camp, part of which is to be bulldozed on Wednesday, performed songs and read out texts they have written, as the Independent mentions.

Celebrities led by Law have written an open letter to David Cameron urging the prime minister to let the children who live in the camp and have relatives in Britain come to the UK and be reunited with them while their asylum cases are heard.

Law is one of the 145 actors who have signed the letter including Stephen Fry, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Berry.

The performance, which was organised by a group called Letters Live and the charity Help Refugees, began with a reading of the letter to Mr Cameron.

“It’s our responsibility as humans to look after our children. The children at the camp in Calais need us. It isn’t a big ask. It is simply the right thing to do.” Law said.

Ministers have resisted calls to take more migrants from the continent – for fear it will encourage others to risk their lives trying to get to Europe, writes the Daily Mail.

Up to now 96,000 people have signed the petition.
